During its two-season run on HGTV, the home renovation series Vacation House for Free followed families transforming fixer-uppers into income-generating vacation properties. I was hired by Departure Films to assist with the show's signature on-screen motion graphics package. My primary responsibility was to execute the stylized "design planning" sequences that visually mapped out the architectural and interior overhauls for the audience before construction began.
-
The core objective of these graphics was to take an unrenovated, empty, or outdated space and reveal its potential through an engaging, layer-by-layer schematic build. Because I was joining an active production workflow, the creative mandate was to seamlessly mimic the established aesthetic and visual style of the lead motion artist. The transitions needed to feel uniform across every episode, blending blueprint precision with an organic, hand-drawn design language.
-
The workflow required a meticulous blend of photo editing and digital illustration to achieve the final broadcast look:
Photo Manipulation: I manipulated raw location photography to clean up and prep spaces for the graphic overlays. This included straightening perspectives, dropping out old fixtures, and establishing the baseline environmental plates.
Furniture & Asset Illustration: I digitally drew realistic furniture, appliances, and decor items (such as couches, dining tables, light fixtures, and custom cabinetry) from scratch. These assets were designed with precise perspective to match the angles of the physical rooms perfectly.
Layered Design Sequencing: I constructed the assets to build on-screen sequentially. The animation sequences would wipe from a real-world exterior or interior photo into a clean line-art schematic, progressively adding walls, structural layouts, top-down blueprints, and final furnished details to clearly illustrate the renovation plan.

The motion graphics package served as a vital storytelling tool across both seasons of the HGTV broadcast. By successfully matching the lead artist's stylistic direction and delivering precise asset positioning, our collaborative pipeline provided viewers with a clear, visually satisfying "before and after" blueprint blueprint of each renovation—significantly elevating the show's overall production value.
