During the COVID-19 pandemic, Broadway theaters went dark, but the global theatrical community proved that the show must go on. In an inventive cross-industry collaboration, Broadway stars teamed up with The Spruce Eats to literally sing their favorite food recipes. I was brought on to design and execute a playful, rhythmic motion graphics package that transformed these theatrical home videos into an interactive, digital sing-a-long series.

Merging high-energy musical theater showmanship with step-by-step cooking tutorials meant the on-screen graphics had to do heavy lifting. The pacing had to feel musical rather than mechanical. The challenge was to develop a captioning and tracking system that perfectly synced with the performers' vocal phrasing and instrumentation, keeping the audience entertained while cleanly conveying actual recipe measurements.

Sing-A-Long Lyrical Captions: Designed a custom typographic style for the video overlays. I precisely timed and animated the text to flash in perfect harmony with the artists' singing, ensuring lyrics like "Ice Cream Sandwich Cake" and "Steak Au Poivre" popped on screen with theatrical flair.
Playful Bouncing Food Icons: To lean into the nostalgic karaoke style, I created a custom "bouncing ball" rhythm tracker. I illustrated and animated context-aware, bouncing food icons—such as a bouncing fried egg for cooking oil, salt shakers for kosher salt, a chocolate chip cookie, and a pizza slice—that danced across the syllables of the lyrics to guide the viewer's eye.
Thematic Title Branding: Integrated The Spruce Eats branding into a custom intro and outro graphic layout. I utilized a clean, flat vector aesthetic featuring geometric piano keys cleverly styled as a kitchen fork and knife, beautifully bridging the worlds of music and culinary arts.

The motion graphics package successfully elevated the home-shot footage into a premium, cohesive digital campaign, driving immense audience engagement, shares, and sing-a-long interactions across social media platforms.
