"Mutant Pizza" – April O'Neil Paper-Cut Trading Card

Role: Illustrator & Contributing Artist
Project: Mutant Pizza
(An Unofficial TMNT Commemorative Trading Card Set)
Charity Beneficiary: The Sea Turtle Conservancy
Year: 2023

Project Overview

Following two fan-made trading card love letters to the X-Men (The ColleXion), the Mutant Pizza project was organized as a collaborative anthology dedicated to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Curated to celebrate 40 years of franchise history, the project aimed to honor every era of the Turtles' legacy—spanning from the original Mirage comics to Nickelodeon animations across both print and screen formats.

The completed card set features a wide array of digital and tactile artistic styles contributed by 48 unique creators. Operating under the "Cards for a Cause" banner, this limited series was designed entirely for charity, with all proceeds from the set directly benefiting the Sea Turtle Conservancy. My explicit contribution to this creative lineup was the design of card #10: April O'Neil.

Design & Core Concept

April O'Neil is one of the most frequently reinvented characters in comic and animation history. The core objective of my design was to respect her legacy while pushing the character into a distinctly modern aesthetic.

The concept was built on two core pillars:

  • Honoring the Origins: I wanted to directly pay homage to the character’s original character design and visual roots from her early Mirage comic book appearances.

  • Modern Inspiration: To make the illustration feel fresh and current, I drew inspiration from Zendaya’s contemporary style, focusing on sharp silhouettes, structural fashion choices, and an air of effortless confidence.

Visual Execution

To create a stark contrast against traditional digital vector illustration, I executed the entire artwork using a physical, hand-crafted paper-cut art medium. This multi-dimensional approach is clearly highlighted in the final composition:

  • Tactile Composition: The character was constructed by precisely cutting and layering solid cardstock paper. This method utilizes real-world physical boundaries, where the natural paper edges and subtle drop shadows create an organic sense of three-dimensional depth against the solid yellow backdrop.

  • Sartorial Reimagining: April's classic 1987 animated yellow jumpsuit was completely redesigned into a high-fashion, structural yellow pantsuit consisting of a draped blazer and high-waisted, wide-leg trousers. The outfit was styled with clean white sneakers, a dark bandeau crop top, and a graphic green tote bag slung over her arm.

  • Demographic Tributes: Her massive, high-volume dark curls were built with layered cutouts to give her hair an organic, flowing texture that heavily echoes her early black-and-white comic book aesthetic.

The Result

The Mutant Pizza collective project successfully leveraged the shared passion of its global artist network to generate vital funding and awareness for the Sea Turtle Conservancy. My paper-cut depiction of April O'Neil was published as card #10 in the official collection index. The final piece stands out as a unique material translation within the set, earning widespread appreciation from independent collectors and fans for successfully marrying vintage comic book lore with contemporary editorial design.
